20 Jan 2016 - Barnbarroch House, Waulkmill Woollen Mill, Shennanton House

Rather than chase obscure 'castles'  a forlorn and lost mansion and a disused woollen mill was the order for the day. When One is castle/mansion/ruin chasing take gumboots and a machete and of course wear protective clothing. What fun! Oh castles are still high on the agenda but there's so many 'lost' mansions and ruins to discover and explore.

... found the wee road off the highway and without too much trouble found Barnbarroch House.  What a surprise - the atmosphere was spine tingling.

mansion hunters had not been here for a very long time - it was overgrown and difficult to access

heading around the boggy marshy side to the rear of the mansion

bye Barnbarroch House - here's remembering how you used to look in 1780 (front and rear)- you really are still a grand old lady.

Setting off for Kirkcowan to explore the old disused Waulkmill Woollen Mill situated on the lovely Tarff River. I didn't expect such a huge complex. It was fascinating. Built 1713 - 1805 with a rehaul in 1880 and production ceased in 1950. .  a small flock of (very friendly) sheep was in residence in the rear paddock.

.. now on to something new-ISH and modern after all this ancient history, so we detoured by Shennanton House built 1908.

(usually don't touch up photos but it was so dull and hazy that I did enhance the next two photos)

ha! these two look like 1950's Postcards!
