Aqueducts and ancestral robbers DAY 1

... on the 10th October driving through stunning welsh countryside (is there any other?) and over the Horsehoe Pass (unbelievable) and on to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (Wales) and on to Baschurch (England) and All Saints Church where 3 x great grandfather Samuel Griffiths Hughes was baptised. The Church dates back to medieval times and is the oldest building in the village.
Overnighted at 200+ year old Coaching Inn at Ruyton X1 Towns and set off the next morning for Shrewsbury (where grandfather would have likely kicked his heels up in many of the drinking establishments) Its known as Tudor Town and has a medieval influence. A fabulous town. From there we made a quick visit to an Ironwork Museum (drive through) and a quick fly by at Chirk Castle and the Chirk Aqueduct and viaduct. Love my ducts. Enjoy the photos, there's notations!

...leaving now, we had a fabulous visit to this magnificent aqueduct

...Baschurch - on my way grandfather!

All Saints Baschurch -

..note baptismal font

...the central pillars are the oldest part of the Church and date back to C12
... it was very dark inside and the lighting was not good for photographs and I wont use a flash

... outside again, I spoke with Angela (the verger) who was coming by to lock up for the day. We enjoyed quite a chat and I learned that because of the date of grandfathers baptism it is unlikely that any records would exist.

...we searched the oldest parts of the graveyard for 'Hughes' and J bless him found one that could well be a relative, but most inscriptions had worn away on the headstones we were looking for.

The verger agreed with me that sometimes a little bit of knowledge and information is enough. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to visit the birthplace of gr gr gr Grandmother Ann Fitpatrick in in Ireland, gr gr Grandfather Frederick Williams in Greenwich London and finally gr gr gr Grandfather Samuel Griffiths Hughes in Baschurch England. I am equally looking forward to closing the circle and visiting their places of rest in country NSW.

... from Baschurch returned to Ruyton X1 Towns for overnight stay at the 200+ year old Coaching Inn. Top floor and lots of crooked stairs!

...goodnight the Inn is calling...

...and that's Day 1. It's good night from me and the Admiral Benbow Inn
stay tuned for Day 2!
